My Favourite Romantic Subplot: The Mummy
After over two decades, romance in times of mummies is still my favourite kind
I was lucky to grow up in a house with a generous collection of atlas, illustrated dictionaries from Larousse, and books about old civilizations. My love for all things Egypt began when I was still a child and grew to a point where I started wearing a necklace with an Egyptian cross — known as the Ankh, or key of life — during a part of my teenage years.
In 2002 I had to change schools again to do my last three years of high school, so I had the chance to make a few new friends. One of those new acquaintances was someone with a huge collection of DVDs at home, and luckily for me, he had no problem lending them to anyone who asked. Among those were The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001).
The scorching sun, the desert, the old city of Thebes¹ in all its splendour. The recounting of a tale of love, as old as the desert sands.
Considering how the movie starts, one would think that the love affair between Anck-Sun-Namun (Patricia Velasquez) and Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) would be the central piece of the story, and although it plays a crucial role in the upcoming adventure, the romantic subplot deserving of attention is one of our times.
