Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy — Retrospective and Ranking
Not since Sergio Leone has anyone gifted the world a more underappreciated unofficial trilogy.
With one of my all-time favorite movies, Shaun of the Dead, turning 20 this month (ouch), I’m chomping at the bit to discuss the trilogy it kicked off.
Like the Indiana Jones series, I have an “official” favorite Cornetto film, but my favorite Cornetto film is also generally whichever one I’m watching.
And yes, detractors of The World’s End, that includes that film as well.
“The Cornetto Trilogy” is a play on the Three Colors Trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski, and refers to flavors of the Italy-originated, U.K. favorite Cornetto ice cream cone as they appear in each film.
The flavors represent the film’s primary motif — strawberry (red, for blood-covered zombies) in Shaun of the Dead, vanilla (blue, for cops) in Hot Fuzz, and mint chocolate chip (green, for aliens) in The World’s End.
On to the films, first in chronological order.
