Not many seem aware of the new Ali Abassi film, The Apprentice. At least not as many as I would expect for a cultural figure who is as controversial as Donald J. Trump. Perhaps it’s fatigue with the subject. Or maybe the public prefers when a biopic about a celebrity isn’t released until after they’ve died or, at the very least, once their career is over. This is a shame, however, because The Apprentice is an interesting, albeit highly uncomfortable film to watch.
The movie is a two-hour introspection of the former president’s early years as a budding real estate mogul. It specifically focuses on Trump’s relationship with his mentor, the infamous Roy Cohn, a lawyer known for his prominent role in the McCarthy trials. Looking at their lives in concert with one another provides an intriguing exploration of how American power operates in the dark.
